Today's post is about finding that hard to find URL for your website. I talk to people all the time about websites and I often hear the comment, "I'm terrible at coming up with good domain names". Indeed, the search for that perfect domain name can be elusive, but I have come up with a sure fire way to find a URL every time.
First of all, lets look at the way most people look at domain names. First thing most people do is try to buy a variation of their business or company name. There are advantages and disadvantages of using this method. The advantage is good if you are not a service based business and people want information only. Service based businesses need a better way however. Let me elaborate. If you are a service based business, and you get your business name as an address, people have a harder time finding your site if they do not know you. For example, Dent Express is a company that is in the paintless dent repair business. Dent Express is taken, so you try to make a variation of this name, lets say Dentexpressc.com or dentexpresscharleston.com. The problem with this is most people will remember dentexpress.com and then be directed to your competition's site! NOT GOOD. Here is a solution. and the way I find domain names. Google provides a tool called a Keywords Tool. You can find the tool HERE. This tool allows you to view keywords that people have actually typed in Google! This means you are looking at keywords that people are searching on a daily basis. The way I use this tool is simple. First I put in a phrase that I would normally type in to search for my product. For example, I search for "Dent Repair in Charleston, SC". This will list a group of keywords related to my search and then tell how much search volume each keyword has. Now, I take the highest searched keywords related to my business and make a domain name out of it. As it turns out, the keywords "Dent Repair Charleston" are the most hit keywords. So, I then check my favorite domain name registrar, GoDaddy, and see if it is available. Sure enough dentrepaircharleston.com is available. How does this benefit my business? You have now picked a domain name based off keywords that people are actually searching! This will make your website more search engine friendly as well as easy to remember for your customers, cause lets face it, customers can forget the name of your business, so you need something easy to remember for them to plug into Google to find you. So, I hope this helped some of you out, if you have any questions about this process,
