Wi-Fi, The best thing to networking since high speed internet?
When most of us think about a computer or the cost of it, we rarely think about or pay attention to how sensitive our data is, or how costly it would be if that information fell into the wrong hands. I challenge you to think of just how much sensitive information about yourself and your clients is stored in your PC. Do you do online banking or shopping? Have you sent a credit card over e-mail to a friend or client? Most of you would say yes to some degree.
Now we have all heard lectures about backups, anti-viruses, anti-spyware programs and others, but today I want to make you aware of what information is going over your airwaves. Broadcast your information with extreme caution! Others might be listening. This article Feds Annouce 'Largest' ID Theft Case shows that large and small networks are at risk. Yes, there are people that drive around looking for wireless networks to exploit the information in them. Once a hacker gets control of your network, he has many tools to extract information from it. He can install a program that looks for any numerical information, including xxx-xx-xxxx or xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx information, SSN's and Credit Card numbers, he could install a keylogger to record everything you type and more. Make sure your wireless network has the latest wireless encription available. Here are the different wireless schemes:
WEP or Wireless Encription Protection - This is the most basic encription type and is easily crackable. There are free software programs on the internet that can listen to your network packets, bits of data streaming back and forth over the airwaves" and get your encription key. Although this is the most basic encription, it is better than nothing.
WPA is a newer encription technology that encrypts your information before it gets sent over the airwaves. This is much safer than WEP.
WPA2 is the newest and best encription technology available. Most of the newer wireless routers support this type of encription, but you must have Windows XP Service Pack 2 or later, or Windows Vista to use it. If you haven't upgraded to WPA2, I strongly recommend you do so.
